Savoy Cocktail of the Week: The Grape Vine & The Green Room Cocktail

Last week we tried the Grape Vine Cocktail. In a fit of boisterousness, I also served up the Green Room Cocktail after coming into possession of a bottle of Curaçao.

The Grape Vine was rather punchy, another great summer cocktail for the porch. I used cran-grape juice instead of regular grape, because (a) I prefer cran-grape to grape and (b) it is very difficult to find a small bottle of plain grape juice. Very.

It was so punchy and enjoyable on a warm night that I even whipped up a batch of seconds. After shaking the ingredients over ice, I included 2 lumps in each glass to keep it fresh.

As for the bonus cocktail, the Green Room comes with a bit of background…

The Green Room

1/3 Brandy
2/3 French Vermouth
2 Dashes Curaçao

Shake well and strain into cocktail glass.

This Cocktail, a great favourite with mummers, is an excellent “pick-me-up.”

And who are the mummers?

philadelphia.about.com

The mummers stage a New Year’s parade every year in Philadelphia. Local clubs—New Year’s Associations—compete in four categories: Comics, Fancies, String Bands and Fancy Brigades. The whole affair involves crazy elaborate costumes and movable set pieces, etc.

The parade is related to the Mummer’s Play traditions of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. The parading bit apparently blends various Scandinavian, European and African traditions—particularly Swedes and Finns in this case… so Wikipedia tells me.

At any rate, it all sounds rather jolly. And of course, the Green Room as a place being the backstage pre-show prep area for theatrical performances ties in with mummers’ activities.

So that’s that.

As for the cocktail, it had a springy green tone from the mixture of brandy and the blueness of the Curaçao (which in general is rather off-putting). It was described as crisp, and I have to say that looking at the list of ingredients it was surprisingly, refreshingly so.

And on to the letter H.

Hakam Cocktail
1Dash Orange Bitters
2 Dashes Curaçao
1/2 Dry Gin
1/2 Italian Vermouth

Shake well and strain into cocktail glass.
